Alpbach
A Tyrolean village that enforces its own building code in wood, half an hour off the Innsbruck motorway and mostly missed by it.
Alpbach has been voted Austria's most beautiful village, and the reason it looks the way it does is regulation: the community adopted rules decades ago requiring new buildings to follow the traditional timber style, so the village reads as a single piece rather than a historic core ringed by modern blocks.
The skiing connects to neighbouring Inneralpbach and, via the Wiedersbergerhorn, into the wider Ski Juwel area shared with Wildschönau. It's a family-weighted mountain — wide intermediate terrain, a handful of steeper pitches, nothing that will occupy an expert for a week.
It sits close to the Inn valley motorway but far enough up its own side valley that the through-traffic never arrives.
