Mayrhofen
The Zillertal's busiest ski town, home to Austria's steepest marked piste and an après scene that starts well before the lifts close.
Mayrhofen sits at the head of the Zillertal with its skiing split across two mountains reached by gondola from the valley floor — the Penken, which holds most of the terrain and all of the noise, and the quieter Ahorn opposite.
The Penken is also where the Harakiri is: at 78% gradient, the steepest marked piste in Austria, and genuinely intimidating rather than a marketing line. Everything else on the mountain is far more forgiving, and the resort skews toward a young crowd that treats the bars as seriously as the snow.
Worth knowing before booking: the skiing is not from the village. Every day starts with a gondola queue from town, and in peak weeks that queue is substantial.
