La Clusaz
A working Haute-Savoie village an hour from Geneva, skied hard by locals and largely ignored by the international crowd.
La Clusaz sits close enough to Geneva that a good chunk of its weekend traffic is French and Swiss day-trippers rather than week-long package visitors, which gives it a different feel to the big-name resorts further south — a village with a working centre, not a lift station with beds attached.
The skiing spreads across five linked massifs, and the interesting terrain is mostly off the groomers: trees, gullies and off-piste lines that hold snow well. The catch is altitude. This is a relatively low resort, so the season is shorter and more weather-dependent than the high-altitude Tarentaise valleys, and a warm winter shows here first.
Best treated as a January-to-March proposition rather than a late-season one.
