The Glacier Express on the Landwasser Viaduct, on the Albula lineRailwaySwitzerland
Glacier Express
- Best time
- Reserve well ahead in summer and over Christmas
- Getting there
- From Zermatt station, or St. Moritz in the other direction
Why it’s in the log
The Glacier Express connects Zermatt, under the Matterhorn, with St. Moritz in the Engadin: 291 km in about eight hours, over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. It's been called the slowest express train in the world, and that's the point; it skips the local stops but never hurries.
The high point is the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 metres. From Chur the line climbs again into the Albula valley, part of a UNESCO World Heritage railway, before St. Moritz. Ride all of it once, or take only the stretch you want.
