Why it’s in the log
Liuzza's by the Track sits directly across from the Fair Grounds Race Course, and for two weeks every spring it becomes one of the busiest sidewalk stops in the city — the closest po-boy counter to the Jazz Fest gates, with a line that snakes down the block. The rest of the year it's a small, divey neighborhood bar-and-kitchen in Mid-City, unpretentious inside and out.
The fried oyster po-boy is the reason people specifically detour here rather than to any of the dozen other sandwich counters in the city, dressed simply and served on the kind of French bread that only holds up in New Orleans humidity. Gumbo and other Creole-Italian plates round out a short menu that hasn't needed to chase trends to stay full.
Outside of race days and festival season it's a quiet, unhurried lunch spot — worth building a Mid-City afternoon around rather than treating as a festival-only stop.
