Why it’s in the log
The palace was built in a few years around 1605 for the Duke of Lerma, Philip III's chief minister, who reshaped the entire town around his own residence and then largely abandoned it once he fell from favour. The building sat underused for centuries before its conversion into a Parador, which is part of why so much of the original stonework and the palace's scale survived intact.
It's a severe, almost fortress-like building on the outside, arcaded square in front, and the interior opens into wide stone staircases and galleries built for a household far larger than any modern hotel needs — you feel the scale more than any applied luxury.
Lerma itself has little beyond the palace and its walls, which is the point: a stop between Madrid and Burgos worth making into an overnight rather than a coffee break.
