Why it’s in the log
The Balmoral opened in 1902 as the North British Station Hotel, on top of Waverley station. The clock on its tower is still set three minutes fast so that passengers don't miss their trains.
On 11 January 2007, J.K. Rowling finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in room 552, then wrote the room number and the date on a bust of Hermes in the room. The room is now the J.K. Rowling Suite, the bust is behind glass, and the suite can be booked, at well above the hotel's usual rates.
