Why it’s in the log
The building is around 500 years old — originally a house, shop and livestock barns that were combined into one inn roughly two centuries ago, as trade and mining traffic through the valley picked up. It's listed for the historic interest of its interior, and it still functions as the social centre of a village that's otherwise just a green, a bridge and a scattering of stone cottages.
The Britannia pours its own beer, brewed at the sister Langdale Brewing operation on-site — five regular ales plus a rotating guest each week, drawn from a well 90 metres below the pub. The Langdale Pikes rise almost directly behind the building, so it works equally well as a fellwalker's base or as somewhere to just sit outside with a pint and look at them instead.
Rooms book out well ahead in summer and across Lake District walking weekends generally — this is a stay-the-week village, not a passing-through one.
