Wengen
A car-free village on a shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley, reachable only by cogwheel train, facing the Eiger.
There is no road to Wengen. The village sits on a terrace above the Lauterbrunnen valley and the only way in is the cogwheel railway from the valley floor, which means no cars, luggage moving by electric cart, and a quiet that resorts with through-roads never manage.
The skiing is part of the Jungfrau region, shared with Grindelwald and Mürren, and it is defined by long, gentle descents rather than steep terrain — the Lauberhorn, the World Cup downhill run that drops toward the village, is the longest on the circuit at over four kilometres. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau stand opposite for most of it.
Expensive even by Swiss standards, and the train dependency is real: plan arrivals around the timetable rather than assuming you can drive up late.
