Avenue of the Giants
Thirty-two miles of the tallest trees on earth, running parallel to the freeway everyone else takes.
The Avenue is the old highway through Humboldt Redwoods State Park — two lanes, no shoulder, canopy overhead the whole way — while US-101 carries the through traffic on a straighter route a mile off. A handful of hamlets sit along it: Miranda, Myers Flat, Weott. None of them amount to much on their own. The point is what's beside the road, not what's in it.
Stay the night rather than driving it in an afternoon, and the groves are empty at seven in the morning, fog still in the canopy, before the tour traffic arrives.
