Innsbruck
Tyrol's capital, a medieval bridge town on the Inn with the mountains standing directly over the old town.
Innsbruck began as a crossing point over the Inn — the name means "bridge over the Inn" — and became one of Emperor Maximilian I's residences, which is where the Golden Roof in the old town comes from. It is a working city of more than 130,000 people rather than a resort, with the Brenner Pass 30 kilometres to the south and peaks close enough to the centre to see from the end of most streets.
