Santiago de Cuba

Cuba's second city, hot, hilly and closer to the Caribbean than to Havana — and the home of trova.

Santiago sits at the far eastern end of the island, nearer to Haiti and Jamaica than to Havana, and it sounds like it. The guitar-and-voice tradition of trova grew up here; the music houses around Calle Heredia still play it most of the day.
