Kronberg
A half-timbered Taunus town built around the hilltop castle a Prussian empress turned into her own home.
Kronberg sits just above Frankfurt's northern edge, close enough for a day trip but a different pace entirely — a walled medieval old town below, and the wooded slopes of the Taunus starting right where the streets end. The castle on the hill isn't the ruin that word usually implies; Kaiserin Victoria rebuilt it as a working home in the 1890s, and it's still lived in around the edges of being a hotel.
