Why it’s in the log

Victoria, Empress Frederick — Queen Victoria's eldest daughter and briefly German Empress herself — built the castle as Friedrichshof in the early 1890s, after her husband's death, as a home rather than a state residence. It stayed in the family for decades; the Hessen family, her descendants, opened it as a hotel in 1954, and much of the original furniture and art collection is still in the building rather than sold off or replaced with reproductions.

That makes it a genuinely unusual case: a palace hotel where the "palace" part isn't a marketing description borrowed from a nearby landmark, and where the family that built it had a direct hand in turning it into a hotel rather than losing it to one. The rooms vary a lot in character as a result — some sit in the original castle, others in a newer wing — worth checking which before booking.

Frankfurt is close enough for a day trip in either direction, which makes Kronberg an easy add to a Germany itinerary rather than a destination that needs its own detour.
