Jodhpur
The Blue City, stacked beneath Mehrangarh Fort on its sandstone ridge, with the desert starting where the old walls end.
Mehrangarh Fort sits on a rock outcrop above Jodhpur and is visible from almost anywhere in the old city, whose houses are washed in the blue that gives it its nickname. The Thar Desert starts just past the newer parts of town, close enough that a half-day trip out of Jodhpur is enough to reach real dunes.
