Why it’s in the log
Borough Market claims to go back to 1014. Written records put a market at the end of London Bridge by 1276, and it has been on its present site since 1756. The buildings are from 1851, with an Art Deco entrance on Southwark Street from 1932.
For most of the 20th century it was a wholesale market supplying greengrocers. By the 1990s it was declining, and from 1996 the trustees let space to food businesses such as Neal's Yard Dairy and Monmouth Coffee, which turned it into the retail market it is now. Saturdays are crowded; weekday mornings are when you can talk to the stallholders.
