Getting there
Cannonborough-Elliottborough, a short walk or bike ride west of the main King Street strip

Why it’s in the log

Chubby Fish is small on purpose: forty seats, no reservation line to call, and a menu built almost entirely around whatever came off local boats that day rather than a fixed card. Oysters, whole fish, and a rotating raw bar make up most of it — what's listed changes with what the water gave up that morning.

It's landed on the Michelin Guide's Charleston list and North America's 50 Best Discovery selections, but the room hasn't changed to match — it's still a genuinely small neighborhood restaurant in Cannonborough-Elliottborough, a short walk from the antebellum houses on the peninsula but a world away from King Street's tourist restaurant row.

There's no way around the wait besides showing up early; the no-reservations policy is deliberate; it keeps the room a true walk-in spot rather than a booked-out destination restaurant.
