Why it’s in the log

Ediciones Vigía was founded in Matanzas in April 1985 by the designer Rolando Estévez and the poet Alfredo Zaldívar, and named after the square it works from. It publishes poetry, stories and essays in editions of a few hundred at most — 200 copies a title is the usual ceiling — every copy put together by hand, with hand-coloured illustrations.

The results are held in special collections from the British Library to university libraries in the United States and Britain. You can also watch them being made: visitors are shown round the workshop and can buy numbered, signed copies.

It keeps working hours, not shop hours, and has been listed as open on weekdays only. Go in the morning.
