Why it’s in the log
Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in 1931 with money from Harry Pickering, a young American he had lent 10,000 lire when Pickering's family cut him off — Pickering came back two years later, repaid him with 40,000 lire on top, and asked that the bar be named after him. That, at least, is the company's own story.
Cipriani invented the Bellini here in 1948: white peach purée and Prosecco. Ernest Hemingway was a regular, and the bar was declared a national landmark by the Italian ministry for culture in 2001.
It is small and expensive. Go for a Bellini at the bar rather than dinner.
