Why it’s in the log
Place des Vosges was built in the early 1600s as Place Royale, and the pavilion at its edge took its name from being the queen's own building on the square — separate from the king's pavilion facing it. The hotel today occupies that building and the ivy-covered courtyard behind it, set back from the square itself rather than fronting directly onto it.
Inside it reads as a small, dense hôtel particulier rather than a grand hotel — low beamed ceilings, a courtyard garden, and rooms that vary a good deal in size and shape because the building predates any notion of standardised hotel rooms. The Marais location puts it within walking distance of the Musée Carnavalet and the square's own arcaded shops without needing a car or the metro.
It's a small property, so the atmosphere depends on staying inside it rather than passing through — worth booking a room that faces the courtyard over one that doesn't.
