Why it’s in the log
The Palacio was built in the 1930s as a private residence for the Duhau family, prominent Argentine landowners with a hand in the country's agriculture and politics — José Duhau, who commissioned it, later served as a government minister. It sits on Avenida Alvear, the street Recoleta's ranching money built up as its own Champs-Élysées, lined with the same era of French-style mansions.
Park Hyatt took it over and connected it to a separate modern tower next door via an underground passage that doubles as the hotel's wine cellar — so a stay here splits between two genuinely different buildings, the Palacio's period rooms and salons and the tower's more contemporary ones. Ask for the Palacio side if the history is the reason for booking.
Recoleta around it rewards walking: the cemetery, with its own dense grid of ornate family mausoleums, is a few minutes away, and the neighbourhood's cafés and bookshops don't need a taxi to reach.
