Getting there
In Panicale's historic center, roughly 45 minutes from Perugia by car

Why it’s in the log

Rastrello occupies a restored medieval palazzo in Panicale, a walled hill town in Umbria that sits above Lake Trasimeno and gets a fraction of the traffic nearby Tuscan hill towns do. The building keeps its old stone rather than smoothing it into something generic — the kind of restoration that works with what's there instead of over it.

The draw is the setting as much as the rooms: a small, quiet town off the main Umbrian circuit, with the lake visible from town and total calm once the day's few visitors leave.

A good base for slow days rather than a packed itinerary — Panicale itself is small enough to see in an afternoon, which is the point.

A stone palazzo above the lake, in a hill town small enough to see whole — good for slow days, not packed itineraries.
