Salumi
- Getting there
- Pioneer Square, downtown Seattle
Why it’s in the log
Armandino Batali — a retired Boeing engineer and father of chef Mario Batali — opened Salumi after training in Italy as a traditional meat curer. Anthony Bourdain closed out the Pacific Northwest episode of No Reservations here, and later told the Seattle Times, "That is a holy place for me... it should be a UNESCO site. It should be a landmark."
The shop runs on Batali family cured-meat recipes: house-made salami, coppa and prosciutto stacked into sandwiches at a counter that's barely changed since it opened. It's takeout-format and often standing-room only — the appeal was never the seating.
Go for lunch, not dinner — Salumi keeps daytime deli hours, and the cured meats sell out by the time the line thins.
“Told the Seattle Times it should be a UNESCO site — for a sandwich shop, that's about as high as Bourdain's praise got.”
