Why it’s in the log
The Tabard Inn was formed by knocking together three Victorian rowhouses on N Street in 1922, and it's operated as a hotel ever since — the oldest one in Washington still running continuously. There's no grand lobby or elevator; the low-ceilinged, antique-furnished rooms and creaking stairs are the point, not a compromise.
The restaurant runs somewhat independently of the hotel's own reputation: a wood-fired kitchen and a fireplace-lit dining room that fills with Dupont Circle regulars who aren't staying the night, especially for weekend brunch. It's an easy walk from the embassies and townhouses around Dupont Circle, a few blocks off the busier restaurant strip on Connecticut Avenue.
Book the inn expecting character over amenities — it's closer to staying in an old friend's converted townhouse than a hotel with a business center, and that trade-off is exactly why it has kept its regulars for a century.
