Why it’s in the log

The building's been a pub since 1867, but it only became a dedicated whisky bar in 1981, when the Waterstone family took it over and started what's now a four-decade run of expanding the shelf — past the Storries, who pushed the collection past 500 bottles, to the Murphy family, who've run it since 2011 and built the gantry out past a thousand.

There's not much décor beyond the whisky itself and a plate of homemade pies if you're hungry — it's a small, often-packed room where the point is the pour, not the surroundings. Staff will talk you through the shelf if you're not sure where to start, which matters given the size of it.

No bookings taken; turn up and find a spot at the bar, and expect it to be busy most evenings.
