Andrew Pern took over the 14th-century thatched building in 1996 and rebuilt it into one of the country's first proper gastropubs, before the word existed to describe what he was doing. The Star won a Michelin star in 2002 — only the second pub in the world to hold one — lost it in 2011, and won it back in 2015; thirty years into Pern's run at the stove, it still holds it.
The cooking leans hard on North York Moors produce, foraging and a seasonal, terroir-driven menu rather than fine-dining formality, and the thatched, low-beamed rooms still read as a village pub first and a Michelin restaurant second. Rooms are available at the attached Cross House Lodge for anyone who'd rather not drive back after dinner.
Book ahead — a Michelin star in a village this size means the handful of tables go fast, especially at weekends.
