Why it’s in the log
The Trout has stood on this bend of the Thames since at least the 17th century — there was likely already an inn on the site by 1625, and the house has been licensed continuously since 1707, with the current Grade II listed building dating mostly from that period. Set that against the peacocks that still wander the garden and the weir just beyond the terrace, and it's easy to see why it's become one of Oxford's most photographed pubs rather than one of its quietest.
It sits a couple of miles upstream from the city centre, past Port Meadow and the ruins of Godstow Abbey — walkable or cyclable from the colleges, and worth the detour on a clear afternoon when the terrace tables over the weir are free.
Weekends get busy fast, partly for the view and partly for the crowds it draws just for being famous — book ahead, or aim for a weekday.
