Oxford
The colleges get all the attention; the river that made the city livable runs quietly past Wolvercote instead.
Oxford's centre sits on the Thames and the Cherwell, but the rivers are easiest to actually spend time on a couple of miles upstream at Wolvercote, past Port Meadow, where Godstow Lock and the ruins of a 12th-century nunnery next door see a fraction of the city-centre crowds. It's a pleasant walk or a short cycle from the colleges, not a separate trip.
