Why it’s in the log
Ueno Park was set up in 1873, among Japan's first public parks, on land that had belonged to the temple of Kan'ei-ji. It has about 800 cherry trees, nearer 1,200 counting the shrine and temple grounds around it, and in season it's Tokyo's best-known place for hanami, the blossom-viewing picnics that claim every patch of ground.
Bashō wrote about these blossoms: "a cloud of blossoms — is the temple bell from Ueno or Asakusa?" The museums are here too, if the crowds become too much.
