Manchester
Cross Street's grandest chop house split off from a family feud, and the feud is why Manchester has two.
Mr Thomas's Chop House and Sam's Chop House both trace back to one family: Thomas Studd broke away from his brother Samuel in 1867 and opened his own place on Cross Street, in a cast-iron-framed building rebuilt in 1901 that's now one of the few Manchester interiors on CAMRA's national inventory of historic pub interiors. The chop-house format survived here in a way it didn't in most cities — heavy tables, dark wood, a menu built around exactly what the name promises.
