Windsor

Windsor Castle is still an active royal residence, not a museum piece — the King stays there most weekends, and the Changing the Guard runs on a real schedule rather than a tourist one. The town itself is compact enough to see in an afternoon; the more useful reason to stay over is the parkland around it, Windsor Great Park's old royal hunting ground stretching south toward Egham.
