Mesta

A fortified medieval village of grey stone, inland and inward-facing, built to be hard to find from the sea.

Mesta was built by the Genoese as a defensible mastic-trading village — narrow arched alleys, thick stone walls, houses that share walls with each other on purpose. It reads nothing like Chios's coastal towns: no waterfront, no view of the sea from most of the village, just stone and shade and a central square.
