Getting there
On the European shore in Beşiktaş, between Ortaköy and Beşiktaş proper, about 20 minutes by car from Sultanahmet

Why it’s in the log

Sultan Abdülaziz had the Çırağan built as his residence in the 1860s, and for a palace on the Bosphorus it had an unusually short run as one — a fire gutted the building in 1910, leaving only the marble shell standing for most of the 20th century. Kempinski restored it and reopened it as a hotel in 1991, rebuilding the interior from scratch behind the original façade.

The result is a working luxury hotel with a genuinely 19th-century exterior directly on the water, plus a newer wing behind it holding most of the rooms — worth knowing before booking, since not every room is in the historic palace building itself. The waterfront pool and the private stretch of Bosphorus shoreline are the real draw; few hotels in the city can offer either.

Beşiktaş around it is a real neighbourhood, not a resort enclave — Ortaköy's mosque and café strip is a short walk north, and the ferry docks are close enough to reach the Asian side without a taxi.
