Why it’s in the log
Commissioned by Hürrem Sultan, wife of Süleyman the Magnificent, and designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan in 1556-57, this hammam sits on the most valuable real estate in old Istanbul — squarely between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque — built as two identical, mirrored halves for men and women.
After a long closure and a restoration completed in the 2010s, the hammam reopened as a working bath again rather than staying a museum, its marble surfaces and twin domes returned to something close to Sinan's original design.
Go for the architecture as much as the bath itself — the mirrored-hall symmetry is a specifically Sinan touch, rare even among Istanbul's other historic hammams.
