Why it’s in the log
The Flåm Line runs 20.2 km between Myrdal, on the Oslo–Bergen railway, and Flåm by the Sognefjord, dropping 866 metres on the way. It has twenty tunnels and a maximum gradient of 5.5 percent. Built from 1924 and opened in 1940, it was meant to connect the fjord to Bergen and Oslo.
It nearly closed in the 1990s, after freight ended and costs rose; instead it was turned into a tourist line, and it's now one of Norway's most visited attractions. Take it up from Flåm and back down, or use it as the dramatic link between the fjord and the main line.
