Why it’s in the log

Budapest's first mayor, Károly Kamermayer, pushed for a great market hall, and it was his biggest project; he had retired by the time it opened, on 15 February 1897, and came to the ceremony anyway. Samu Pecz designed it.

It works on three levels. The ground floor sells produce, meat, pastries, spirits and — for visitors — paprika, Tokaji and salami. The upper gallery has eateries and souvenirs. The basement is where the fishmongers and the pickle stalls are.
