Fallen petals on the Philosopher's Walk in blossom seasonPhilosopher's Walk
- Best time
- Early morning in blossom season, usually early April
- Getting there
- Bus to Ginkakuji-michi, then walk south
Why it’s in the log
The path follows a shallow canal bringing water from Lake Biwa, between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji; it first opened in 1890 and was extended in 1912. It takes its name from two Kyoto University philosophers, Nishida Kitarō and Hajime Tanabe, who are thought to have walked it every day.
The walk takes about half an hour, past Hōnen-in, Ōtoyo Shrine and Eikan-dō. In cherry blossom season it's one of the busiest places in Kyoto, so start at dawn from the Ginkaku-ji end.
