Red Ruin Bar plays its theme straight rather than letting it emerge from junk-shop furniture: communist-era murals of Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Mao — all wearing party hats — line the walls under a wash of red fluorescent light, with rock and metal on the speakers rather than the DJ sets of the bigger venues.
It sits south of the main District VII cluster near Ferenciek tere, small enough to feel like a proper dive rather than a destination, with cheap craft beer, shots and Hungarian pálinka keeping the prices as unpretentious as the decor.
Go for the theme and a cheap round rather than an all-night stay — this is a starter stop on a bar crawl, not the main event.
