The Ruin Bars of Budapest

Nine bars built out of Budapest's condemned buildings — the two everyone knows, and seven most people miss.

Szimpla Kert and Mazel Tov are on here because leaving them off would be dishonest, not because they're hidden — they're the two rooms that built District VII's whole reputation, and both are tagged as the tourist anchors they've become. The other seven are the actual point: a below-street-level pub locals never left, a summer-only garden with hammocks under mulberry trees, a vaulted medieval cellar that predates the entire genre, a communist-kitsch dive south of the main cluster.

Three names from an earlier version of this list — a courtyard bar, a kitchen-attached spot, and a bakery-turned-taproom — didn't survive a second check against Google Maps and were dropped rather than guessed at. What's left is nine bars, confirmed live, none of them a wrong turn.
